York Harbor Maine - Things to Do and Area Links
-
- Lighthouses
and Waterfront Attractions
- Numerous
other waterfront attractions await you on the scenic York
Harbor, Maine coast and its surrounding area.
The
Nubble Lighthouse
York, Maine. If you take a left as you
leave the Inn, the Nubble Lighthouse is located three miles
northeast. The Nubble Light is located just north of Long Sands
Beach. This beautiful landmark is an active lighthouse and is
located on a small rocky island at the end of the point. This
famous and well-photographed lighthouse resides on a rocky
outcrop of a small island. The annual "Lighting of the Nubble"
always takes place the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Sohier Park,
York Beach, Maine 03910.
The Goldenrod
The Goldenrod is located in the heart of Short Sands Beach on
Railroad Avenue. The Goldenrod has been making traditional salt
water taffy since 1896 – an oceanside treat for all ages. Taffy
is made in full view of spectators and it is quite an
educational experience to watch. As the bubbling mass of
ingredients is cooled, pulled, twisted, cut, and wrapped before
your eyes, the sweet aroma of melting sugar cane fills the air.
The impeccably clean machinery is displayed for all to admire.
It's a very interesting process to watch. Of course, the kisses
are also a nice treat to take home. Call 207-363-2621 for
seasonal hours and more information.
Boon
Island Lighthouse, York Harbor,
ME. – Boon Island Light is six miles offshore and visible in
clear weather from Harbor Beach. Erected in 1811 on a barren
rock island, the 132 foot lighthouse operates today, as in the
past, as a continual beacon to sailors. It can be seen up to 21
miles at sea.
A story of a happening on this island is told in the novel Boon
Island by Kenneth Roberts, 1956. Fact, and legend perhaps, has
it that in December 1710, the Galley Nottingham wrecked on the
island. Twelve of the crew of fourteen survived the wreck. After
20 days the ships carpenter died, his bones were stripped of
their "beef" and the fat from the kidney was used to soothe
frostbitten feet. After 24 days, a passing vessel discovered the
shipwrecked survivors and brought them to shore.
Perkins
Cove
Perkins Cove is located 12 miles north of York Harbor just off
Coastal Route 1A. You can take a nice drive up the scenic Shore
Road and venture to Perkins Cove in Ogunquit. Once in Perkins
Cove, take a walk on the Marginal Way, a mile and half footpath
along the rocky coast, window shop in the unique stores or hop
on one of the excursion cruises aboard the Finest Kind boat
charters. It's a wonderful mix of shops, restaurants, art
galleries and touring boats.
Fort
Foster - Pocahontas Road Kittery
Point, Maine
Beautiful hidden beaches, picnic areas and restrooms. Explore
the remains of Fort Foster's bunkers built in 1872. There is a
small admission fee. Open seasonally from dawn to dusk. Phone:

Sandy Beaches
Long Sands Beach
Long Sands beach runs parallel to
Coastal Route 1A and is approximately 2 miles long. Sections of
the beach are most popular for surfing and volleyball
tournaments are often played in the sand. The best swimming is
about the middle of the beach where public restrooms are also
available. Metered parking is available along the side of the
road. Long Sands Beach is only 1 mile from the Inn.
Short
Sands Beach
Short Sands Beach is a mile further
north of Long Sands on Coastal Route 1A. This beach has a higher
sand bar and therefore is better for sunbathing at high tide
than Long Sands. Enjoy watching salt water taffy being made the
old fashioned way at the Goldenrod or play some arcade games at
the Fun-O-Rama. York Beach is a traditional New England beach
town and is filled with family activities including many gift
shops, restaurants, an arcade, and bowling. Also located in the
heart of York Beach is York's Wild Kingdom and Amusement Park
complete with a full zoo, a petting arena, amusement rides and
more. Numerous sidewalk shops and places to eat are also located
in the park. Call 1-207-363-4911 for seasonal hours and more
information.
York Harbor Beach
York Harbor Beach is just .5 miles
up the road from the Chapman Cottage. Known as the ‘locals’
beach, it often is full of children riding the waves and
families picnicking in the sand. This is a more secluded beach
that is close by and great for tide pooling.
Cape Neddick Beach
Cape Neddick Beach is located on
the Shore Road headed into Ogunquit, Maine. Like York Harbor
Beach, it is a secluded beach that is great for tide pooling.
Limited permit parking only is allowed along the roadside from
Memorial Day through Labor Day.

Horseback Riding - Horseman's Center (Wells), Long Horn
Stables (Old Orchard), Mt. Agamenticus Riding Stables (York).
Tennis - Gloria Perkins (Cider Hill, York),
Mount
Agamenticus - A 15-20 minute drive
can take you to the top of Mount Agamenticus, affectionately
known as "Big A". Not high as mountains go, 692' ASL, but from
its peak on a clear day one can see the skyscrapers of Boston to
the south, Cape Elizabeth and the entrance to Casco Bay to the
North and the Presidential Range, including Mount Washington, to
the West. As you look down from the summit on a clear day, the
Isles of Shoals - about 10 miles off York and Boon Island -
about 6 miles from the coast, seem like a stones throw from
shore.
You can drive to the top or if you are hardy souls, you can park
to the right at the gate and walk up. It's only a 15 or
20-minute walk. There are picnic tables for those who care to
use them, but the north slope beyond the old lodge is a more
desirable spot for true picnickers. There are a lot of low bush
blueberries around so if you're up there in the middle to late
July, they're yours for the picking. Follow Chases Pond Road
which merges into Mountain Road for approximately 6 miles. The
access road to the top of the mountain is just prior to where
the road becomes unpaved. Take a right at this point. A short
drive up a steep incline will bring you to the summit. Maps are
available at the registration desk. Don't pass the large rock
pile you see up there without reading about the legend.
According to this Indian legend, Chief Aspinquid was being
chased by settlers when he jumped off the west face of the
mountain only to die upon landing. The rock pile stands as a
memorial to the chief. Anyone who pays tribute to his soul is
assured of having favorable luck in the future.

- Join in a
traditional celebration of the coming holiday season as the
townspeople "light up" the Village in thousands of white lights
or our "Christmas in July" lighting!

second is the Annual Lighting of the Nubble and both events are held
at Sohier Park.
The
Annual Lighting of the Nubble is always held the first Saturday
after Thanksgiving. The event begins at 5:00 p.m. and countdown to
lights on is around 6:00 p.m. This is a fun family evening with a
variety of entertainment. Other events around the holidays include
our traditional Christmas parade, caroling, craft fairs, business
open houses, refreshments and the arrival of Santa Claus!
